Doll House Design

If you want to try your hand at doll house design and design your own doll house there are a few things you should know before you get started.

1. The majority of doll houses are 1/12th scale which means they are twelve times smaller than in real life. If you want standard sized doll house furniture to fit in your doll house then you should make it to 1/12th scale.

2. The height of doll house rooms usually ranges from 7 ½ inches to 12 inches depending on the type of house you are creating. A small cottage with low ceilings would have rooms about 7 ½ inches high where as a grand mansion would have ceilings between 10 and 12 inches high.

3. Most standard doll house parts like windows and doors are made to fit 9mm thick MDF wood. If you want to use ready made windows and doors you will need to use 9mm MDF.

4. You can get ready made straight and spiral staircases so you could use either in your doll house.

5. If you plan on putting in chimney breasts pick your fire surrounds first to make sure you make the chimney breasts wide enough. There are lots available.

7. 1/12th scale is too small for Barbie dolls. They will require a much bigger house and it is unlikely you will find ready made windows and doors in the larger scale.
